"Perhaps Love" Beijing Premiere Press Conference

Original URL: http://ent.sina.com.cn/m/p/2005-11-30/1404912912.html

Xin Mei Media's "Perhaps Love" held a press conference at Beijing Xiyuan Hotel on 30th November 2005. Peter Chan attended the event along with his cast, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun, Jacky Cheung & Ji Jin Hee, and producer Andrew Morgan & Tan Hong.

At the press conference, Takeshi said that he had watched "Perhaps Love" himself & really like it, as the movie reflected individuals' views on love. Takeshi said that his greatest regret in "Perhaps Love" is not having the chance to sing a song together with Jacky, but he feels very honoured to be able to perform in the same musical movie with him. During the period of filming, Takeshi, who stayed next to Jacky, always heard him singing. He even laughed at himself for calling out to others to come & record Jacky's singing. Zhou Xun said that the movie was filmed this season last year & hopes that everyone will like this movie. Jacky feels that this movie is not only very touching, the songs & dances are very nice too. In this movie, his singing style is very much different from his usual pop singing, it is more like opera singing. Jacky even discovered his fear of heights, after doing a flying scene in the movie.

Soap opera on stage

By MICHAEL CHEANG

Snow.Wolf.Lake is not your average The Phantom of the Opera-like musical. In fact, it resembles a Hong Kong TV soap opera more than The Phantom of the Opera or Cats.

The brainchild of Hong Kong Cantopop superstar Jacky Cheung, Snow.Wolf.Lake is a Chinese stage musical that revolves around the tragic romance of Wolf (Cheung), a poor gardener, and Snow (Evonne Hsu), a girl from a well-off family.

The story is reminiscent of Hong Kong Cantonese TV series. Besides the star-crossed lovers, there are also the jealous suitor, the shy sister who secretly loves the protagonist and the loud-mouthed, stuck-up mother who only wants Snow to marry a rich man. Add some songs, some dancing, and transfer the whole mix onto a stage, and voila! You have Snow.Wolf.Lake.

All right, as bad as the description may sound, I have to say that Snow.Wolf.Lake was actually a pretty decent show. Though it was only last Friday and Saturday that Malaysian audiences finally got a chance to catch it on our shores, the Cantonese version of the musical was conceived in Hong Kong eight years ago. The show proved to be so popular that a Mandarin version was produced earlier this year, touring China and Singapore before finally landing in Malaysia.

All 9,000 seats in the Putra Indoor Stadium were filled during Friday’s show, though judging from all the cries and screams of “Jacky” before the show, it was pretty clear whom most of them were there to see.

Well, if it was a Jacky Cheung solo concert they wanted, then they would have been disappointed. But then again, this was so much better than the average Cantopop concert. The acting was good, the singing was superb, the songs were both familiar and memorable, and the stage effects were at times quite remarkable.

I was especially impressed with the two female leads, both of whom gave surprisingly pleasant performances. Evonne Hsu as Snow gave an accomplished performance, while Nadia Chan was excellent as Fong, the forlorn sister who is relegated to the background, as she watches the courtship of her sister and the man she herself loves.

However, as accomplished as the other actors were, Snow.Wolf.Lake was all about Cheung.

An acclaimed director once claimed that there is hardly anyone in Asia who can sing and act as well as Cheung, and it is easy to see why. His singing and acting were superb the whole night, and time and again, he stole the show from the other actors (though it’s not hard to do that when you’re on stage two-thirds of the time).

When he sang his laments to his love, you could feel each and every heartbroken emotion in his voice, and when he spoke, there was an element of childish innocence that supplemented his otherwise one-dimensional character.

The set-up of the stage was also suitably elaborate, and a few neat effects here and there made the show memorable.

One scene that was executed very well was the one that had Wolf and Snow in a boat in the middle of a lake. Another impressive scene was the take with the “prisoners” dragging out their cell bars and erecting them at the front of the stage to simulate a prison cell. So simple yet so effective.

However, there was one negative element – many of the songs were so recognisably “Jacky Cheung” that sometimes it felt like I was watching one of his solo concerts rather than a musical. In fact, I half expected the crowd to break out into a mass sing-along at one point.

Story-wise, the play’s dialogue and plot were nothing to shout about. While the whole tragic love story bit was bearable, the story descends into silliness by the third-quarter, when a white wolf (his fairy god-wolf, perhaps?) appears and tells Wolf about a time tunnel that will enable him to go back and change the past. Huh?

Cheesy plot mechanisms aside, Snow.Wolf. Lake was memorable for the great songs, the stylish set, and the efforts of the entire cast, particularly Cheung, who deserved every accolade he received for coming up with the play in the first place.

Ultimately, while it is below Broadway or West End standards, Snow.Wolf.Lake is still a polished production that meets Cheung’s goal of introducing the all-singing, all-dancing, over-the-top world of stage musicals to an Asian audience weaned on pop concerts and “idol” worship.

Malaysian audiences were mesmerised by Hongkong musical Snow.Wolf.Lake, reports Peter Yap

There was no screaming and whistle-blowing at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil last Friday as it wasn't a concert.

Instead, the crowd was mostly silent, focused completely on the debut of the longawaited Hongkong Chinese musical, Snow.Wolf.Lake starring the God of Song, Jacky Cheung. Although the original Snow.Wolf.Lake conceived by Cheung in 1997 was in Cantonese, the Mandarin version was staged to reach out to Mandarin-speaking audiences in China, Taiwan as well as Southeast Asian countries. Still Malaysians are grateful they finally got to watch the Mandarin version after an eight-year wait.

Snow.Wolf.Lake tells the tragic love story of a poor gardener Wolf (played by Cheung), who falls in love with Snow (Taiwanese singer Evonne Hsu), who is from a rich family. Unknown to them, Snow's sister, Phoenix (Hongkong actress Nadia Chan) is also in love with Wolf. However, their plans to share a life together is shattered by the deceptive Liang Jik, who wants to make Snow his own.

On the first night of the two night run, 7,000 people turned up in full force to watch the musical and Cheung in particular. Luckily there was no screams of "Jacky" and "Hokyau" as it wasn't a one-man show although Cheung, who was also artistic director, was the lead actor and has the best singing voice on stage.

The audience was enthralled by the music and the story, the spectacular set and elaborate costumes. Scenes changed with ease with the fully-auto mated stage that went from being a mansion to a rundown church and a marketplace. There was even a boat where Wolf and Snow first declared their love for one another.

Still, the success of the musical would not be complete without the songs. The Mando-pop songs were mostly moving ballads such as Snow Loves Wolf, Wonderful Lovers' Festival, Simply Put It's Love and Love is Eternal, delivered with such depth of feeling by Cheung.

The sweet and beautiful Hsu also rose to the occasion and the ever reliable Chan was outstanding, her voice just soared into the night. Even the choruses gave memorable performances, although one just couldn't make out the faces on stage when they were "a mile away".

Despite being the star of the show, Cheung blended in with the extras and there was that sense of camaraderie between them; this partnership added to the magic of the whole musical.

Bravo to the leads and the supporting cast who gave dazzling performances as they won the audience's approval.

At the end of the close to three hours musical and 30 songs later, the audience, many of whom were in tears, stood up to give the cast and crew of Snow.Wolf.Lake a standing ovation.

Snow.Wolf.Lake was presented by DiGi and organised by Galaxy Production.

Snow Wolf Lake's High Standard Peformance Earns Standing Ovation

(KL Report) Due to location issues etc, the Cantonese version of Snow.Wolf.Lake skipped its show in Malaysia 8 years ago. 8 years later, on 25th November, Snow.Wolf.Lake finally arrived in Malaysia.

Although it was in Mandarin this time round, the performers' excellent performance vividly brought out the happiness & sorrow of the characters in the show, & grasped the hearts of the audience, despite the change in language.

The audience's applause accompanied every climax of the show, each time louder than the one before. In this night, the almost 6000-strong audience came to Bukit Putrajaya Indoor Stadium to watch Jacky's musical, Snow.Wolf.Lake.

The audience had already rewarded the performers with 3 bouts of applause as the music started. The huge stage & beautiful setting appeared authentic & grand under the spotlights. Although part of the audience who were seated far away from the stage, could not see the performers' facial expressions clearly, they felt their emotions through their body language & singing.

Body Language Touches Audience

Jacky's live singing was undoubtedly great, his singing was so clear that the audience didn't have to read the lyrics on both sides of the stage, in order to understand what he was singing about.

Jacky's performance from the first time he met Evonne, falling in love, suffering in prison & the pain of losing his loved one, really expressed Wolf's endless love for Snow. The scene of Jacky hugging Evonne & singing "Hugging Snow" especially touched the audience.

Due to her ballet background, Evonne put on a natural performance, acting with Jacky. Her beautiful dancing, brought the innocent character of Snow to life. Nadia, who acted as Pheonix who was secretly in love with Wolf, wasn't really that spectacular. Her singing was not on par with Evonne.

Many of the audience would have come in support of Jacky. However, after watching the performance, besides being "satisfied", one also has a better understanding of musicals. This high standard performance also gave one a feeling that the ticket price was definitely worth it.

Bitter-Sweet Love

Snow.Wolf.Lake can be said to be a bitter-sweet love story.

Wolf, a gardener, falls in love with a rich girl, Snow. The baddie Liang Zi, who is madly in love with Snow, makes up a plot to send Wolf to prison, & lied to Snow that Wolf was already dead. The devastated Snow left for Vienna & married Liang Zi. Suffering in prison, Wolf picks up the courage to live on, upon receiving advice from the Old Wolf Spirit.

After leaving the prison, Wolf goes back home & is grateful when he realises that Pheonix has been helping him look after his flowers. When Wolf knows that Snow is having a hard time in Vienna, he rushes there to find her & they meet on the streets. Snow, who always thought that Wolf was already dead, goes home & quarrels with Liang Zi. She is unfortunately shot & dies.

Wolf begs for the Old Wolf Spirit to bring him back to the moment before Snow dies. He carries Snow into the lake. Both of them are forever floating in the eternity of time. This lake was later known as "Snow Wolf Lake".

Jay Chou Secretly Watches the Performance

Jay, who had just finished his Malaysian gig, stayed on to film some commercials. In order not to attract attention, he chose to enter awhile after the performance started & sat at a VVIP seat.

Jay was wearing a cap & a jacket. When the 1st half of the show was about to end, some co-workers accompanied him to the backstage. Perhaps he felt that his presence was exposed, as he didn't turn up for the 2nd half of the show.

Expensive Ticket Prices Do Not Deter Crowds

Watching Snow.Wofl.Lake is much more expensive than watching normal concerts. The cheapest ticket price is RM140, the most expensive is RM690. Almost every corner of this stadium, that can only hold 6000 people, was packed with crowds. Even the most expensive seats were about 90% occupied.

The total number of co-workers involved were about 230. As the stage props & lightings were plentiful, they used a total of 34 big cases to transport all these important stuff.

Jacky had earlier already announced that after the 7th January 2006 show, he will officially retire from the Snow.Wolf.Lake performance. So as to say, these 2 performances in Malaysia are the 1st & also the last.

Audience Praise Jacky for Excellent Performance

Most of the audience interviewed bought the most expensive tickets in support of their idol. After watching it, they all left feeling excited & singing praises of their idol's performance.

Striking a sure note

Striking a sure note
SHARON WONG
Nov 25:

With four heart-throbs, Broadway-style songs and dances, exciting circus performances and spectacular sets, Perhaps Love has a lot going for it, writes SHARON WONG.

THERE’S a buzz in town and it’s all about the latest Chinese blockbuster, Perhaps Love. Not only is it touted as an intense romance musical (there hasn’t been a musical in the Chinese film industry for 35 years), it also has such big names as producer Andre Morgan, Oscar-winning cinematographer Peter Pau, Bollywood’s hottest choreographer Farah Khan and multiple award-winning Hong Kong director Peter Chan at the helm.

And that’s not all. Perhaps Love was the closing film in this year’s Venice Film Festival and is Hong Kong’s official entry for the 78th Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film.

It also has a stellar cast from four regions, comprising Hong Kong’s God of Songs, Jacky Cheung, Japanese-Taiwanese heart-throb Takeshi Kaneshiro, China’s Zhou Xun and South Korea’s Ji Hin-hee.

Throw in the fact that it is a kaleidoscope of spectacular set designs, breathtaking circus performances and mesmerising Broadway-style song and dance numbers, do you wonder why people are sitting up and taking notice?

As the advance guard of the film’s promotional activities, director Chan was in town last week to satisfy some of the curiosity the film has generated. “I wouldn’t say that Perhaps Love is a 100 per cent musical,” he said.

According to Chan, only 30 per cent of the movie is musical while the rest is still a love story. The musical part has been played up to draw people back to the cinemas. Chan said that it is indeed sad that most people these days prefer to watch movies through VCDs or DVDs at home, over the Internet or even on the handphone. “It is only when there is a mega blockbuster, usually an action or wushu film, that people will flock to the cinemas,” he said.

“However, I feel that a mega blockbuster is not restricted to just those genres. An emotional or love story is just as good on the big screen and I hope to draw the crowd back into the cinemas with Perhaps Love.”

The making of Perhaps Love was simply awesome. “The difficult thing about filming this movie was that the musical part was exceptionally loud and flamboyant while the love story part was exceptionally quiet and realistic. The question was how to balance the two.”

Although Chan’s forte lies in filming love stories — he gave the audience such blockbusters as Comrades, Almost a Love Story, which garnered nine awards including Best Film and Best Director (Hong Kong Film Festival in 1997) and He’s a Woman, She’s a Man (Directors Guild of Hong Kong in 1994), which also won Best Film and Best Director — he admitted that he knew nothing about musicals and was initially intimidated by the idea of directing one. But he rose to the challenge. “I was very insecure but it was interesting as we did not know what’s going to happen and our excitement and energy exploded on the screen.

“Every day was a gamble. It was very stressful. I probably aged five years in those 10 months of filming. But now, looking back, there was also lots of fun.”

Shot in Beijing and Shanghai, the film is a US$10 million (RM38 million) production told in a movie-within-a-movie, featuring a love triangle. Jealousy, hatred and passion ignited by memories of the past collide and culminate through the intervention of a seasoned muse, a modern-day Cupid, who shares their joy and sorrow.

Besides the powerful talking point of Perhaps Love being a musical, another major attraction is definitely the cast and where Cheung, Kaneshiro and Zhou are concerned, Chan said that they were his first choice from the start. “I wanted Zhou Xun for the female lead because she is a very likeable person and the character is not,” Chan said. “Zhou is very affecting and I’m sure she will be able to make people cry.

“Takeshi is the only actor who is the right age and who looks naive enough to be addicted to one woman for 10 years. His eyes are very painful and he’s perfect for the role.

“As for Jacky, no one can sing and act like he does. He’s also old enough — his character must be at least in his 40s — and although not good-looking, he has a certain charm and sensitivity to him.”

Chan revealed that initially, Andy Lau was his choice for the role of the muse but he was unable to make it due to contract problems. Chan finally settled on South Korea’s fast rising heart-throb Ji Hin-hee and fine-tuned the script to fit him in.

“Obviously, the movie would have gone another way if Andy had been able to make it but Ji worked out great too,” said Chan. “He looks like the kind of man who would lend you his shoulder in times of trouble. He’s trustworthy and has an innocence about him ... to me, he just looks like an angel!”

With a great cast and crew, anticipation is high for the release of Perhaps Love. And now, here’s a chance for fans to rub shoulders with some of the stars when they come here in conjunction with the movie’s release.

Chan will return together with Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun and Ji to meet fans at the Esplanade, KLCC Park, on Dec 3 at 5pm. A series of related contests will be held via Astro and www.gsc.com.my and winners can expect an exclusive lunch date with the stars, attend the premiere of the movie on Dec 7, as well as get other movie passes and exclusive movie merchandise.

Perhaps Love, which is funded by Astro Shaw, with worldwide distribution by Celestial Pictures, opens on Dec 8 at Golden Screen cinemas.

"Perhaps Love" tops NY Film awards

BEIJING, Nov. 25 -- Chinese blockbuster "Perhaps Love" was named Best Foreign Film at the Queen Film Festival in New York last week beating out five other nominees.

"Perhaps Love," by Hong Kong director Peter Chan, is also bidding for Best Foreign Film Award at the 78th Academy Awards.

The New York Queen Film Festival is known to Americans as a preview to the annual Academy Awards.

The film is now taking road shows around the U.S. and its premiere in Los Angeles attracted about 200 Oscar judges.

The film will also hold a grand premiere in China on November 30th at the Beijing Exhibition Center.

The cast and crew of the film is slated to attend the gala premiere, including leading actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun, Hong Kong veteran Jacky Cheung and South Korean star Ji Jin-hee.

Jacky Arrives in Malaysia

November 24, 2005 23:30

Jacky Arrives in Malaysia for Snow.Wolf.Lake Musical Performance

Jacky arrived in Malaysia on the 6.30pm evening flight, in casual attire. After stepping out of the VIP area, Jacky specially spent 10 minutes accepting interviews from the local media. He also expressed his kind & friendly attitude, by accepting all fans' requests to take photos.

Jacky & his manager, Florence Chan, along with 3 other co-workers, specially arrived earlier in Malaysia to carry out rehearsals for the musical performances at Putrajaya Indoor Stadium on 25th & 26th November. The rest of the 138 on-stage & off-stage co-workers of Snow.Wolf.Lake had already arrived between 18th & 24th November.

Jacky was wearing a blue long-sleeved woolen top & jeans, as well as a Disney cap. When asked whether he liked such caps, he joked, "I have some other caps too. You know, I don't have many clothes to wear!"

Although there weren't any fans who came specially to welcome him at the airport, there were several tourists & airport staff who came upon knowing. Their requests to take photos with Jacky were rejected by his assistant, but Jacky still initiated taking photos with them, so as not to disappoint anyone.

When Jacky was escorted away by security, a Malay passerby even exclaimed, "Ah, Jacky Cheung!" Just look at his charm!

Jacky's flight MH073 was scheduled to arrive at 6.45pm, but it arrived earlier at 5.49pm. Jacky said that he was indeed feeling tired, so he would have a good sleep tonight, so as to perform at tip-top condition at tomorrow's performance. He will also avoid spicy stuff for the time being.

When asked whether his wife & daughters came along, Jacky said, "My family didn't come along, because school is re-opening soon!"

Jacky also said that Snow.Wolf.Lake will be moving to Taiwan after the performances in Malaysia, then moving to China for performances at 2 locations.

Jacky Hurt By Eason's Tennis Shot

21st November 2005 (Monday)
Jacky Hurt By Eason's Tennis Shot

Jacky Cheung & Eason Chan were respectively paired off with the women's double tennis champions of Olympics 2004, Li Ting & Sun Tian Tian, for a tennis game. Although Jacky got hit on his neck by Eason's shot, his side won with a 6-2 score. Jacky paired off with Li Ting, while Eason paired off with Sun Tian Tian, for the "Tung Wah Charity Celebrity Cup" match, which raised funds of about HK$950,000. Jacky, a tennis lover, was praised by the audience for his performance. He & Li Ting played well together, leading the game with a 4-0 score. Eason's performance was not as good, he either faulted on his serves or hit the balls out of the court. He was full of expressions & did all he could to hit the ball, creating much entertainment to the game. Eason & Sun Tian Tian tried very hard to catch up in the game. Eason hit one ball very hard towards Jacky & hit him on the right side of his neck, causing a red patch & Jacky yelled in pain.

Jacky felt that this was his worst play so far, "I usually play quite well, so I'm not satisfied with my performance today, it's only 40-50% of my usual performance. After getting hit by the ball, my standard immediately dropped as I was scared of getting hit again. Usually, I will be able to avoid the ball. If I had known earlier, I would have hit it back to him."

Jacky admitted that he feels pressurized being paired off with a professional in an official match, especially since he is not used to having an audience. When asked whether he will consider going into professional tennis, Jacky said "Are you kidding? It'll be so embarassing if I play badly." When asked why he doesn't feel scared when singing in front of thousands, he said "It's different. You can't see whether I'm scared on stage. But you can see it when I'm playing tennis."

Jacky used to play tennis with Eason, he praised Eason's tennis skills. But after knowing that Eason had represented his school while studying in England, Jacky joked "Then his school results must be poor."

Jacky Describes the Similarities of Pain & Happiness

Like many other fathers, there are many painful & happy stories about his children.

Jacky attended the opening ceremony of a radio programme called "Parents' Love" & announced the results of a survey polling parents' most painful & most happy stories about their children. A father brought along his autistic son to attend the event. When the little boy heard Jacky's song "Love is Eternal", he even knew how to hum along to the song. His father was also surprised by it, therefore this song become the theme song for the radio programme. When Jacky knew about this yesterday, he felt touched & kept playing with the little boy & took pictures with him. The little boy even gave him a kiss.

"Love is Eternal" Interests Autistic Child

Jacky expressed that he didn't expect his own song to have such influence, but felt touched knowing that it could actually make someone happy. As a father of 2 daughters, Jacky's painful stories are of course that of his daughters being sick. His happiest stories are also naturally that of them being healthy. Although his 2 daughters are only 5 years old & 8 months old respectively, what he's most worried about is that his daughters may self-mutilate in future. He said, "The things that my daughters do, will make me happy. For example, my elder daughter said that she won't get married, so she can stay with daddy. I know that's a lie, but I'm still very happy. I told her to wait till she's older."

Don't let Children get Addicted to the Internet

According to reports, parents are very happy if their children don't pick up lost things on the streets. Jacky knows this & also wants to talk to his elder daughter, because she's always picking up things on the streets. Reports also indicate that parents are even happier if their children are cheerful. Jacky said that his elder daughter is starting to get addicted to watching TV. Jacky rejoices that his 2 daughters are very cheerful, sometimes too cheerful that they are beyond discipline. Reports state that parents are worried when their children get too addicted to the Internet & watching TV. Jacky said that his elder daughter is starting to get addicted to watching cartoons. Jacky said that he will be very sad if his daughters were to be addicted to the Internet in future, because he knows nothing about the Internet. When asked about whether his elder daughter hit his younger one, he said, "They do hit around but it's all just play."

Worried & Regretful About His Father

Reports reveal that the most painful issue in parents' hearts are when their children are sick. Jacky said, "It will definitely make parents very worried. For example, my 70 year old dad's cerebellum (little brain: a region of the brain that plays an important role in the integration of sensory perception and motor output) has shrank, & he can't move around freely. He has to be hospitalized whenever the weather changes. As a son, I also can't help him. I can only make more doctor friends, so that I can ask for advice when problems arise."

Jacky also regrets not knowing his parents' birthdays, because even his parents themselves can't remember their own birthdays. The only thing Jacky can do now is to try & make them remember his birthday. Is his & May's ways of teaching their children the same? Jacky replied that many parents, like his wife, focus on their children's academic results, but he feels that parent-child relationship is the most important.

MTV Chi To Launch With Viewer-Voted Video

November 17, 2005

MTV Chi, the soon-to-be-launched customized MTV channel catering to Chinese-American young adults in the U.S., is asking music fans worldwide to help shape its historic debut on December 6, 2005.

In an MTV first, MTV Chi will tap into MTV's immense global audience in the U.S., China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore to determine which artist and music video will be the first to air on the new network, which caters to the more than two million Chinese-Americans residing in the United States.

Via online voting, U.S.-based Chinese artists such as Jin and Johnny Hi-Fi will go head to head against Canto-pop legends like Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung and Leon Lai and Mandarin artists such as Jay Chou, Faye Wong, Jolin Tsai and Stefanie Sun as they vie for the privilege of being the premier music video to launch MTV Chi.

"MTV Chi's mission is to provide millions of Chinese-Americans a totally unique connection to the youth culture of their countries of origin," said Nusrat Durrani. "This type of exchange is a reflection of the day to day lives of many young Chinese Americans, and our goal is to have MTV Chi reflect that diverse and unique bi-cultural experience."

Websites for MTV's Chinese audiences throughout Asia will link to www.mtvchi.com where fans can place their vote, and the artist chosen will join the ranks of The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" (MTV US in 1981), Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" (MTV Europe 1987), Chang Chih Cheng's "Back To Loneliness" (MTV China in 2003) and Rabbi Shergill's "Bulla Ki Jaana" (MTV Desi in 2005). The video receiving the most votes online will be unveiled on MTV Chi Tuesday, December 6 at 8:00PM ET/5:00PM PT, with streaming of the video and other MTV Chi programming available globally online at www.mtvchi.com on December 7.
